Former deputy mayor stages car crash to avoid going to trial over an assault on a taxi driverBy Mason White 8:08 AM January 23, 2018
Police in Australia have announced the arrest of 4 people including a former deputy mayor.
Three men and a woman have been arrested as part of an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a two-vehicle crash in Sydney.
Police were called to the scene of an accident at about 8:45 a.m. following a collision between a Mercedes AMG and a Mitsubishi Outlander.
The driver of the Mercedes was identified as former Auburn deputy mayor 31-year-old Salim Mehajer. He was freed by fire emergency crews and taken to Westmead Hospital, where he was treated and later released.
No one else was injured.
Following an extensive investigation, police arrested Mehajer and 2 other men who are aged 28 and 30, along with a 31-year-old woman.
Mehajer was charged with perverting the course of justice and conspiracy to cheat and defraud an insurance company.
The charge of perverting the course of justice came after police determined that the former mayor staged the crash with his friends on the day that he was supposed to go on trial for allegedly assaulting a taxi driver.
