Grandmother lost lawsuit demanding compensation from killer who choked her after he raped and murdered her daughterBy William Martin 7:55 AM January 23, 2018
People are shocked over the injustice that was done against a woman after authorities denied her compensation after she was choked by the man who raped and murdered her daughter.
81-year-old Margaret Skidmore of Bilston, England, was seeking compensation after she was choked and left for dead by Leroy Campbell.
Campbell broke into the home of Skidmore’s daughter, Lisa, 37, after watching her for a few weeks. He raped and murdered the younger woman.
He then turned his attention to Skidmore. He choked her with a wire from a vacuum cleaner and left her unconscious.
The suspect then set the home on fire to cover up his crimes. Luckily, neighbors who saw the smoke were able to rescue the grandmother.
Skidmore was rushed to a hospital, where she was treated and released.
Campbell, who had been on parole at the time of the attack, was sentenced to life in prison.
Skidmore was seeking compensation for her injuries. However, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority in charge of awarding taxpayer-funded payouts to victims of violent crimes, ruled that Skidmore did not qualify for compensation.
The organization questioned whether Skidmore really suffered serious injuries. They did not believe that her jaw had been broken as she claimed.
They added that “bruising to your head, black eyes, bloody nose, bloodshot left eye, swelling over your cheek, tenderness around your jaw, and bruising and cuts to your neck are not qualified as a significant continuing disability. Therefore, we were unable to make an award.”
A devastated Skidmore said: “It’s not about the money, it’s the principle. It adds insult to injury because right from the very start, my family has had no rights in this case.”
This shocking decision came after the same officials awarded £6,000 ($8,300) in compensation to killer Levi Bellfield, who murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.
Dowler received the money after suffering a swollen lip during a prison fight.
