A long-time hunter from Croatia has died after being shot while trying to kill lions in South Africa, according to police.
Mahikeng police said that they have launched an investigation after 75-year-old Pero Jelinic was shot dead while hunting lions at the Leeubosch Lodge.
Police do not yet know who fired the shot that killed Jelinic.
The person who fired the shot is facing charges of culpable homicide and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
According to the police investigation, Jelinic hunted animals all his life in Europe.
Jelinic recently told his friends that he already hunted anything that could be legally shot in Europe and it was time for him to move on.
He decided to travel to South Africa to hunt more exotic animals.
He stayed at the Leeubosch Lodge, which is owned by Dr. Gideon Engelbrecht.
On Saturday, Jelinic and two of his friends were out on the farm to hunt lions.
After Jelinic shot dead one lion and as he was getting ready to shoot another, he got hit by a bullet.
He was rushed to the Vryburg Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Engelbrecht was not at the scene during the shooting.
