A doctor lost his job after being accused of choking a nurse inside an operating room.
The surgeon, Venkatesh Sasthakonar, 44, was arrested in Long Island, New York, after allegedly placing an elastic cord around the neck of the nurse.
According to Nassau County police, Sasthakonar, who specializes in weight loss surgery, became furious with the 51-year-old nurse at the Nassau University Medical Center when she gave medication to patients too early.
According to police, the doctor approached the woman from behind at around 4:45 p.m. and wrapped the cord of his sweatshirt around the woman’s neck.
Sasthakonar allegedly told the nurse: “I should kill you for this.”
Sasthakonar was arrested without incident and the nurse was treated for neck pain.
Sashakonar was charged with strangulation and assault. The doctor has been practicing in the hospital since 2008 and performs bariatric surgeries on obese patients.
After the incident, the doctor was suspended from his job. He was released from jail after posting $3,500 bail in cash.
