Hundreds of passengers remained stranded overnight after a plane was forced to make an emergency landing due to a disruptive man, according to police in Alaska.

Anchorage police said that the man, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

According to the police investigation, on Thursday night, the man was on a United Airlines flight from Chicago, Illinois, to Hong Kong when he began to act out.

The passengers of United Flight 895 noticed that the walls of several toilets were covered in feces, and as a result, the whole plane had a bad smell.

The man, who was not identified, then tried to flush his shirt down the toilets.

He was then seen shaking all the seats near him.

When confronted, the man poured soda and water on the floor and on laptops.

That is when the pilot decided to divert the flight to the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

Police waited for the disruptive passenger at the gate and arrested him.

He was then taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

United said that all the passengers were sent to nearby hotels as a cleaning crew had to disinfect the plane.
