A student football coach abducted a young girl who was walking on a street before raping and killing her, according to police in Missouri.
Springfield police said that they have arrested 49-year-old Craig Wood after being accused of fatally shooting 10-year-old Hailey Owens.
Wood has been charged kidnapping, rape, and capital murder.
He was found guilty of capital murder.
Greene County Circuit Judge Thomas Mountjoy sentenced Wood to death.
According to the police investigation, Wood worked as a football coach at the Pleasant View Middle School and supervised students sent to a suspension room.
One day, when Owens was walking on the street, Wood approached the little girl with his truck and dragged her inside.
Witnesses at the scene began chasing after Wood but he managed to get away with the 10-year-old girl.
One man used his car to follow Wood but the kidnapper managed to disappear.
Wood took Owens to his home, where he raped and sodomized her.
He then dragged her to his basement, where he shot her to death.
