A man admitted to killing his parents because he wanted to put them out of their misery, according to police in South Carolina.
Boiling Springs police said that they have arrested 40-year-old Stephen Belcher after being accused of fatally shooting 69-year-old Henrietta Green Belcher and 69-year-old William Edward Belcher.
In court, Stephen pleaded guilty to 2 counts of voluntary manslaughter and one count of possession of a firearm during a violent crime as part of a plea bargain agreement with prosecutors.
He was originally charged with murder.
Circuit Court Judge Derham Cole sentenced Stephen to 10 years in prison.
According to the police investigation, Stephen took care of his sick mother after she had a heart attack and several strokes.
William became extremely angry and frustrated because of his wife’s condition.
He began asking family members and strangers to kill him and Henrietta.
At some point, Henrietta became tired of her husband’s abuse.
She urged her son to do what William asked him and others to do.
Stephen claimed that he then decided to kill his elderly parents to put them out of their misery.
He grabbed a gun and shot both of them.
He then covered their bodies with a white sheet and left their home.
