A teacher who had a long sexual relationship with a student tried to kill his wife because she found out about his affair, according to police in Michigan.
Wyoming police said that they have arrested James Philip Chelekis, 32, for slashing the throat of his wife Amanda.
In court, Chelekis pleaded no contest to attempted murder and pleaded guilty to criminal sexual conduct.
He was sentenced to serve up to 60 years in prison.
Chelekis will have to wear a GPS monitoring device for the rest of his life if he is released from prison on parole.
According to the police investigation, Chelekis and Amanda were married for many years and they have two children together.
The two children are 3 and 5-years-old.
Amanda worked as a nurse while Chelekis was a teacher at the Crestwood Middle School.
At some point, Chelekis began having sex with a 14-year-old student.
The girl told her parents that she had to babysit her teacher’s children in order to meet with Chelekis.
The sexual relationship lasted for more than a year until Amanda found out about it.
Early one morning, at around 5:00 a.m., Amanda confronted her husband about the affair.
Chelekis kissed Amanda’s forehead and then pulled out a knife.
He slashed her throat and left her bleeding on the floor of their home located in 1700 block of Oakvale Drive.
The couple’s two children were sleeping nearby.
Chelekis waited 55 minutes until calling 911.
He lied down next to his wife and told her that he wanted to watch her die.
Amanda survived the attack.
Chelekis defense attorney told the court that he suffered from an undisclosed mental illness but the judge rejected the argument.
