Mother found guilty of fraud gets lenient sentence after agreeing to get sterilized so she cannot have kidsBy Mason White 5:46 AM February 11, 2018
A mother who faced 10 years in prison received a lenient sentence after agreeing to get sterilized so she cannot have children.
Summer Thyme Creel of Oklahoma pleaded guilty to making and cashing counterfeit checks.
Creel was caught after using a $202.22 counterfeit check at Walmart.
U.S. District Judge Stephen Friot advised Creel that she will get a reduced sentence if she voluntarily underwent surgery to prevent pregnancies.
Creel, a 34-year-old mother of 7 children with different fathers, underwent the procedure and had the proof to show the judge before her sentencing in an Oklahoma City federal court.
According to court records, Creel, who is a drug addict, already gave up her parental rights to 6 of her children after a Department of Human Services investigation.
Prosecutors disagreed with the judge’s decision to give the mother a lenient sentence, saying that her decision not to have more children is unrelated to her crime.
Creel was sentenced to 1 year in prison and three years probation. She also was ordered to pay more than $15,000 in restitution.
